Two Vietnamese Kids Use Saved ‘Lucky Money’ to Donate 20,000 Face Masks to the UK
A shipment of 20,000 face masks were recently sent from Vietnam to Britain where personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers are in very short supply.
The life-saving package came from two children in Hanoi who used years-worth of saved “lucky money” to buy and donate the masks, according to The Independent.
Truong Thi Linh Nhan and Truong Cao Khoi were able to donate such a significant number of masks with money saved from every lunar new year since they were very young.
Two kids in Hanoi recently gifted 20K medical masks to 🇬🇧, using the “lucky money” that they’ve saved up for a few years. These masks have been sent to 🇬🇧 successfully on our special commercial flight last week. Many thanks Nhan & Khoi! You can read Amb. @GarethWardUK‘s letter 👇 pic.twitter.com/02s3VIZ4lv

The special gift was transported via a commercial flight last week by the British embassy in Hanoi. The flight also repatriated 100 British nationals.
A letter from British ambassador to Vietnam Gareth Ward and a picture of Nhan and Khoi near Tower Bridge in London were recently uploaded by the embassy on Twitter.
“I am glad that you, who are at very young ages, care about the world and have contributed to the fight against the virus,” Ward said.
“I believe that your gift is really meaningful to doctors, nurses and healthcare workers in the UK, who are working around the clock to fight against the virus and save people’s lives.”
In Vietnam, adults traditionally place a small amount of money inside a red envelope and give them to children as a wish of good luck and fortune for the lunar new year. It is viewed as a symbol of health, peace and happiness among the Vietnamese people.
According to the embassy, the children had known about the pandemic situation in the UK so they chose to spend the money they had been saving up for several years on masks for medical staff.
Ward noted how the children made him feel “hopeful about the future.”
“If everyone plays a part in this fight, I believe that we can overcome this pandemic,” he added. “These masks have been sent to [Britain] successfully on our special commercial flight last week. Many thanks Nhan & Khoi!”
