Road cycling races are usually held on a circuit, but Tokyo 2020 will mark the first time different start and finish points will be used at the Games. Male riders will be covering a 244km course, while females will tackle 147km as they compete for gold.
Cycling events will be split between road races and individual time trials. The former will allow riders from the same country to compete as a team as they aim for individual medals, with 130 men and 67 women participating in the 2020 Games. A total of 40 men and 25 women will compete in the individual time trials, where each rider will race individually against the clock to test their performance.
