Take it from Mashable's own Rachel Thompson: Home composting is a huge "win-win activity" on the sustainability front. You're not just making a nutrient-rich fertilizer that'll help your plants thrive — you're also diverting food waste from landfills, where it would've generated some of the harmful greenhouse gases that drive climate change. (Here's a not-so-fun tidbit of trivia: Food waste in the U.S. has a greater carbon footprint than the entire airline industry. It's a problem, people.)

If you're green to the whole composting thing (pun intended), rest assured that you don't need to build a huge outdoor operation or have access to an industrial facility to get started.
