- Trump almost fired Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner through a tweet.
- That's according to a forthcoming book by the NYT's Maggie Haberman.
- Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were Trump's senior aides throughout his presidency.
Then-President Donald Trump almost fired his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner as his senior White House aides through a tweet, a rough-and-tumble approach to removing his Cabinet officials that wasn't thought to extend to his family members, according to a forthcoming book by the New York Times' Maggie Haberman.
CNN published an excerpt from the book on Wednesday, detailing that Trump floated the idea of firing these family members serving as senior advisors during meetings with his then-chief of staff John Kelly and then-White House counsel Don McGahn, Haberman wrote.
Trump was about to tweet the dismissal, but Kelly interjected, telling the president to have a conversation with Ivanka and Kushner beforehand. Trump never ended up bringing it up to them, Haberman wrote.
Both Ivanka and Kushner stayed at the White House throughout Trump's four years in office, often accompanying the president on trips with foreign leaders. Kushner helped lead several parts of the Trump administration's agenda, including criminal-justice reform, trade agreements, Middle East policy, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump became well-known for his routine firings of his top aides and Cabinet members via tweet. Among the many officials he let go through the social media platform were his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Defense Secretary Mark Esper, and top Department of Homeland Security official Christopher Krebs.
Haberman's book, "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America," comes out on October 4.
