"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has smashed box office records, scoring the biggest opening for an animated film ever.
It took $204.6 million in its first five days on release in the US and a total of $377 million globally, beating the $358 million global opening for "Frozen II," according to figures from media-analytics company Comscore.
In the US the film took $31.7 million on Wednesday, $26 million on Thursday and a further $146.4 million Friday to Sunday.
It's also the biggest opening of any film so far this year, beating "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"SMB," from Universal and Illumination, is based on Nintendo's video game franchise. It stars the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser.
Despite generally poor reviews from critics and a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, fans of the game have flocked to watch the movie over Easter.
They appeared to enjoy what they saw given that it has a huge 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has a 7.4 rating on IMDb, based on about 30,000 reviews.
The Hollywood Reporter said "Super Mario" was set to be "the first all-audience blockbuster of 2023." As well as the PG-rated title winning interest from families, it was also "appealing to the generations of adults who grew up playing (or still play) Nintendo's wildly popular Mario games."
According to the trade publication, it's also a record opening haul for a film based on a video game.
IMAX said that the movie had delivered a record opening weekend for an animated film. It said the movie performed strongly internationally and was the biggest IMAX opening weekend of all time in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia.
The film has a running time of just 92 minutes, much shorter than many blockbusters, allowing theaters to pack in more screenings. "Avatar: The Way of Water," for example, ran for more than three hours.
