Today, Amazon announced that its annual Prime Big Deal Days event will run from Tuesday, Oct. 6, through Wednesday, Oct. 7. The 48-hour sale for Prime members, often referred to as "October Prime Day," serves as the retail giant's unofficial kickoff for the holiday shopping season.

Amazon moved up its flagship Prime Day sale from mid-July to late June this year, reportedly because of the timing of the FIFA World Cup and the U.S. 250th anniversary. But Prime Big Deal Days is happening during its usual fall time slot. Here's what you should know before you shop.

The best early Prime Big Deal Days offers we've spotted:

What is Prime Big Deal Days?

Prime Big Deal Days is a two-day, members-only sale that Amazon puts on every year in early October, a little over a month before Black Friday.

Amazon held its first fall Prime event in 2022, positioning it as "a chance to kick off the holiday shopping season early." That year, the event was called the Prime Early Access Sale. In 2023, Amazon renamed it to Prime Big Deal Days and expanded its scope to cover "everything Prime members need for Autumn," including early holiday offers and deals on seasonal household essentials like groceries.

Prime Big Deal Days' deepest discounts typically go to Amazon devices like Kindle e-readers and Echo smart speakers. (It is an Amazon event, after all.) In the weeks leading up to the event, some of those devices are already on sale.

As of mid-September, the best early Prime Big Deal Days offers take up to 60% off select Fire tablets, Fire TV Sticks, and Kindle accessories:

Additionally, shoppers can take advantage of free or dirt-cheap extended trials of Amazon services ahead of Prime Big Deal Days. A couple of the deals are open to everyone, not just Prime members.

Those who haven't tried Amazon Music Unlimited before can get four free months' worth of the streaming service with a Prime membership. (Nonmembers get three months free.) Prime also unlocks a $0.99 per month deal for four months of Audible Standard, an audiobook service.

Kindle Unlimited, Amazon's e-book subscription service, is now free for your first three months, no matter your Prime status.

From now through Oct. 5, the day before Prime Big Deal Days starts, Prime members can save $20 on Grubhub orders of $30 or more by entering the code DEALS20 at checkout. (Reminder: One of Amazon's Prime benefits is a free Grubhub+ membership worth about $120 per year.)

Finally, if you buy or lease a new car through Amazon Autos from now until Oct. 7 — yes, Amazon sells cars — you'll receive a free $1,500 gift card, so long as you're a Prime member.

What to expect once Prime Big Deal Days starts

Beyond the Amazon of it all, Prime Big Deal Days normally features deals on products from popular brands like Apple, Bissell, Bose, Dyson, Eufy, Keurig, KitchenAid, Lego, Ninja, Samsung, and Sony. That includes gadgets like headphones, earbuds, laptops, tablets, TVs, gaming gear, and robot vacuums.

We expect Prime Big Deal Days tech deals to be especially popular this year, given the ongoing RAM shortage that's forced extensive price hikes across the market. Just last month, Amazon itself raised the prices of over 20 of its devices due to "significant increases in memory and storage component costs," a company rep told Fortune.

In a blog post, Amazon said it will drop new deals three times per day while Prime Big Deal Days is live: at 3 a.m., 11 a.m., and 4 p.m. ET. These limited-time offers will be called "Today's Big Deals" and involve "some of the best savings of the season’s newest models and brands," it said, including Shark and Anker's Soundcore line.

Will any retailers be competing with Prime Big Deal Days?

Other major retailers typically run their own sales alongside Prime Big Deal Days.

So far, Target has confirmed that it will host a concurrent Circle Deal Days sale from Oct. 6 to 7. The event is open to members of its Target Circle loyalty program, which is free to join, though upgrading to the paid Target Circle 360 membership tier gets you early access on Oct. 5.

Do you need to be a Prime member to shop Prime Big Deal Days?

Like summer's main Prime Day sale, Prime Big Deal Days is only open to members of Amazon's Prime program. However, you're still eligible for the deals even if you're only on a trial Prime membership. Most people get 30 days free, but college students and those ages 18 to 24 get six whole months of Prime for free through the Prime for Young Adults program.

To sign up for Prime, visit amazon.com/amazonprime. Just remember to cancel your membership before the trial period expires to avoid having your account converted to a paid subscription. (Amazon currently charges $14.99 per month or $139 per year; Prime for Young Adult members receive a 50% discount.)
