Super Micro Computer just gave the market a bullish update on AI demand
GTC
- SMCI gave strong preliminary revenue figures ahead of its first quarter earnings report.
- The AI infrastructure company said that revenue would be $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion for the quarter.
- That smashed earlier guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.
Super Micro Computer allowed investors worried about waning AI demand to breathe a sigh of relief on Wednesday.
Along with a burst of excitement following SpaceX's strong results, SMCI has helped boost the AI trade as investors get ready to take in key financial updates from the biggest tech companies.
The AI infrastructure firm dramatically raised revenue projections for its fiscal first quarter ahead of its scheduled earnings report on November 3, citing the strength of AI demand. The company said that revenue would be $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion, above guidance of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.
SMCI stock surged 15%, sparking momentum for several other tech stocks, including Dell and Hewlett Packard, which jumped 5% and 3% respectively.
"As demand accelerates, we are improving profitability through a richer enterprise customer mix and broader adoption of our optimized Data Center Building Block Solutions® (DCBBS) architecture," said CEO Charles Liang.
The lofty demand projections come at a critical time for investors. Confidence in the AI trade has faltered recently amid rising concerns about debt-driven data center expansions and questions regarding when hyperscalers' massive capex will pay pff.
Earlier this week, South Korean cloud infrastructure firm Elice plunged in its first day of trading, sparking fresh volatility that rippled into US markets.
Wall Street analysts have touted the benefits of market safe-havens lately as the AI trade stumbles. But Super Micro Computer's revenue strength, specifically tied to AI demand projections, indicate that the market's hottest trade may still have room to run.
The company didn't go into detail about which companies are among its big customers, but Chris Versace, senior portfolio manager at TheStreet Pro notes that SMCI caters to some of the biggest names in the tech sector.
"Known key customers of Super Micro Computer include Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave," he stated. "Super Micro's beat-and-raise revenue points to strong spending from that customer cohort and others. The pull through is positive for AI and data center chip providers"
Versace isn't the only finance pro who sees this as a highly bullish indicator for the health of the AI trade.
David Morrison, senior markets analyst at Trade Nation, noted that SMCI's sales forecast raise is likely to serve as a bullish indicator, though he added that SpaceX's recently reported a Q3 earnings smash is also likely helping breathe new life into the AI trade.
"Does this signal that the worst is over when it comes to the selloff across tech, and in particular chip stocks, seen since the beginning of this month?" he noted. "Maybe. Certainly, there has been yet another impressive start to the earnings season."
