An Asian American family living in Twin Peaks, San Francisco received hate and threatening messages after putting a “Black Lives Matter” sign in their window.

Speaking to KRON 4, homeowner Debbie Lee said that the sign has been around since 2015, but only received untoward letters in the mail recently.

The family suspects that the sender — or senders — must come from their neighborhood.

“We think it might be someone in the neighborhood because they know we are Asian,” Lee told CBS.

Lee’s family received two letters. The first they got in July stated, “BLUE LIVES MATTER! Get rid of your sign or WE will!”

After ignoring that message, another came a month later saying, “It’s time to replace your BLM sign. How about CHINK LIVES MATTER?”

The family refused to be silenced by the anonymous messages and responded by putting a second sign that stated, “STANDING WITH MY NEIGHBORS AGAINST HATE”.

Lee shared her story at a community meeting on Monday, where she asked neighbors for support in standing up against hate.

This is not the first time Asian people have been targeted for proclaiming that Black Lives Matter. Despite this, the community has only tightened their support, much like Lee’s family.
