Canon Unveils the EOS M5: An APS-C Mirrorless with an EVF (Finally)
Canon today announced the EOS M5, a new redesigned mirrorless camera that indicates Canon’s desire to compete better in the mirrorless world.
For the first time in a Canon mirrorless camera, there’s a built-in 2.36-million-dot electronic viewfinder (EVF), something photographers have long been requesting from Canon’s EOS M line.
At the core of the camera is a large 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, powered by a DIGIC 7 Image Processer and with an ISO range of 100 to 25,600. The camera has the fastest autofocus speed of any EOS M camera so far. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF helps provide smooth and precise AF for photos and videos, and allows for Touch and Drag AF for adjusting your focus by dragging the AF frame around on the LCD screen — even while you’re staying through the camera’s EVF.
To further assist your manual focusing, there’ sa focus peaking feature that highlights in-focus areas in the EVF and on the LCD.
Another first for the EOS M5 is the inclusion of a low energy Bluetooth Smart feature that allows it to stay connected to a smartphone or tablet running Canon’s Camera Connect application.
The physical design and interface of the Canon EOS M5 have been redesigned from previous models, adding improved ergonomics and operability.
Other features and specs include a continuous shooting speed of 7fps (up to 9fps with AF Lock), Full HD 60p video recording in MP4, 5-axis digital image stabilization, a 3.2-inch tilt LCD screen with 1.62 million dots, Wi-Fi and NFC, and fast camera startup and shooting interval times.
Announced alongside the EOS M5 is the new Canon EF-M 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens, which has a high-zoom ratio and a 4-stop image stabilization system. The lightweight 8.3x zoom lens has an 29-240mm equivalent range (in 35mm terms), and a maximum magnification of 0.31x at 150mm.

The new 18-150mm lens will also be available by itself in graphite or silver for $500 starting in December.
