iPhone 7 launch as it happened

iPhone 7 launch as it happened

iPhone 7 launch liveblog

Update: The Apple event is now over - we heard all about the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, Apple Watch Series 2 and much, much more. Read on below to see how the event went down minute by minute.

Is it already that time of year again? You better believe it, as Apple's iPhone launch event is upon us once more as we prepare ourselves for an onslaught of new devices from the Cupertino firm.

We're coming at you live from the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, reporting from Apple's special event at which we expect to see the new iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch 2 break cover.

That's not all though, as there's also a chance we'll see a wave of new Macs (maybe), the iPad Pro 2 (unlikely), iPad Mini 5 (highly unlikely) and perhaps even a new iPod (highly, highly unlikely), minus a headphone jack.

All times in PT (San Francisco)

11.49 - Tim's back on stage. We're wrapping up now. Thanks for sticking with us guys - you rock the most! Stick around for our imminent hands on reviews with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus - it's a long way from over yet!

11.48 - The new iPhones can be pre-ordered from September 9, and to buy from September 16 - with the usual places (UK, US etc) at the start.

iOS 10 will be released on September 13, and the Airpods will cost $159 from October. Weird that there are such disparate timings.

11.46 - Finally we're getting 32GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes. The new models start at $649, and the iPhone 7 Plus starts at $749. Jet Black will only be available on 128GB and 256GB sizes. Interesting move.

11.44 - Watching a video now on how all the new stuff will help you do everything easier, more simply and better than ever. It's certainly a better phone than I was expecting, but then again I was ready to be underwhelmed.

iPhone 7

11.43 - Going through all the features now - and there are a lot of them. But how much will it cost?

iPhone 7

11.42 - Battery stats are up. The longer battery life ever in an iPhone - which you'd expect. This lasts two hours more day to day in standard usage than an iPhone 6, and an hour longer than the iPhone 6S.

11.41 - 'Nothing proves performance like 400 flying monkeys'

11.38 - We're seeing what this chipset can do now - Adobe apps on there and console quality gaming on the phone. I swear I've heard this every year for a while now.

ThisGameStudio on stage now, looking cool but nothing mind-blowing. We're used to seeing great graphics on smartphones now - they can render a lot on this app, but it's going to be a tough sell as a single feature.

The new Airpods

11.35 - Finally onto performance. With the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus 'blows away' everything that's been done before. The new chip is called A10 Fusion, a quad core CPU.

Two cores are high performance, 40% faster than the 6S and 6S Plus. The other two cores are high-efficiency cores, can help you get longer battery life. We've seen this before in Android phones, but at the same time it'll help get your Apple phone lasting longer.

11.34 - Apple Pay is coming into Japan, as the new iPhones and Apple Watch Series 2 will have Felica (a rival tech to NFC) packed inside.

11.32 - Beats headphones are doing the same thing, using the same W1 chip, and there's PowerBeats 3 Wireless and Beats X. So a new wireless experience.

But this is all locking you into Apple devices. Is that a bad thing? Do you ever connect your wireless headphones to a computer, or only to a phone or tablet... and if you have an iDevice, you probably don't have both.

11.30 - Dammit, no heart rate monitoring. Probably would have eaten all the battery though. You only need to put them near your iPhone, and open the case. Looks pretty slick -- and straight into the Apple Watch as well.

But is it Bluetooth or a proprietary format?

Earpods11.28 - Wireless Airpods are a real thing. Using the Apple W1 chip, designed to stay connected with high performance, with infra red sensors that can tell when they're in your ear, and you can tap them to access Siri too.

They can hear your voice and understand when it's happening through vibration recognition, and target your voice. There's a wireless charging case, that can pump them full of charge for 5 hours.

Earpods

11.27 - Losing the headphone jack is being promoted as a noble step to help rid us wires into our phones, that this kind of move has to be made to get rid of phones packing the 3.5mm port.

11.23 - There are now over 900 million Lightning enabled devices. Apple is talking up how the connector is perfect for audio... unsurprisingly. At least Phil is addressing the lack of 3.5mm headphone jack - there'll be Lightning Ear Pods and the 3.5mm adaptor in the box.

Phil is posing the question: 'Why would Apple drop this?' 'COURAGE'. That was the word he used.

Phil saying that the Lightning connector is a great way of sending audio. Also, that smartphones have new technology that are fighting for space, and maintaining an 'ancient, analogue' connector doesn't make sense.

And 'when you have a vision of how audio should work on mobile devices', this is what you have to do. But Phil's going one further: making it wireless.

11.22 - Stereo speakers on the iPhone! Top and bottom! This is what we're talking about - and twice the volume of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. That was it for audio... but wait, what about EarPods? And they're being connected over Lightning.

Confirmed no headphone jack.

11.20 - Ian Spalter, head of design at Instagram, is on stage now. He seems mega excited to be here. Instagram is getting on with the new zoom, with integrated with new haptic feedback system. And you can use the Live Photos to make a Boomerang instantly.

11.19 - The Retina HD display is 25% brighter, there's a higher color gamut, the Cinema standard of color saturation, and 3D Touch is back too. But what about the resolution?

11.18 - Interesting - it'll be a software update later this year, not coming right now. Why's that?

11.15 - It creates a depth map from that image - and can blur the background. 'A huge breakthrough with what can be done with smartphone photography'. Not sure HTC will agree with that.

But, like Live Photos last year, you can bet that Apple will make it something people are desperate to do. In fairness, the live depth of field photo is a cool feature. And the quality does look high, so will be interesting to see how it can do compared to the HTC from 2014.

iPhone 7 camear

11.14 - Next up is a 'creative project' from Apple's engineers. Phil's talking about shutter depth of field... is this going to be the same thing we saw in the HTC One M8?

11.11 - Now we're talking about the Plus - it's a dual camera array. The other camera is a telephoto lens, both 12MP. Is this like the LG G5?

It's a zoom feature built into the iPhone 7, that telephoto lens can take a picture from twice as far away, with new user interface tweaks to allow you to allow you zoom from 2x to 10x much more easily.

Interesting - this method was great on Nokia's PureView technology, but it never really caught on. Apple probably has other ideas.

11.09 - Looks like the headphone jack went because Apple needed to fit in the taptic engine. But will it be worth it?

iPhone 7 home button

There's a 7MP sensor on the front, so you'll get even better images of your face with technology taken from last year's technology.

11.08 - Now we're talking about the pictures from the iPhone that professional photographers have taken. Good low light photography, but our EIC Darren Murph is making sounds that tell me he's not super impressed...

iPhone

11.05 - The new iPhone camera has an all new camera system. It's an optical image stabilisation - and oh, we're getting an iPhone 7 Plus. An f/1.8 aperture, which is pretty impressive. Larger sensor, 12MP. The flash is quad-LED, which can compensate for flickering in the atmosphere.

No dual camera on the iPhone 7 - step down. The leaks were right. But the new image sensor processor, working out people and bodies and then sets the color, white balance and focus with the Focus Pixels.

iPhone 8

11.03 - Now those things can be programmed by third party apps, the Taptic engine now in the iPhone as well. Be interesting to see how that works in real life.

The phone will also be water resistant. And it's IP67 protected - not as strong as the the Samsung, but good enough for most drops and spills.

11.02 - The Home Button is next up. It can still do all the other things that you need. But now it can't be clicked, like the iPod, electrostatic and force sensitive, works with a taptic engine.

iPhone 7

11.01 - Phil Schiller on stage talking about it. It's got a new finish, a jet black finish. A high gloss finish, seamless between black and screen. Antennas are subtle and hard to see. There's a second new black called.... black. And a black Apple logo. Looks pretty snazzy. It's also in gold, silver and rose gold.

No blue... all the leaks were wrong.

10.59 - Man, that phone looks thin. He's saying words like capillary, saturation, dye... magnetised? Particle bath? What is happening?

10.58 - Jony Ive is on video! Aluminium body, made with very few parts - and there's the dual camera again. Looks like all the leaks were completely wrong. It's excellent that they're on both devices.

This whole thing looks completely different. The leaks might have been wrong...

iPhone

10.57 - 'Of course, the world's most advanced mobile operating system deserves the most advanced smartphone... here it is'.

The best iPhone we've ever created. Wait, dual cameras on the smaller model too?

10.56 - This is taking a long time now - come on Tim, we've already seen the new iPhone. Let's hear all about it!

10.54 - iPhone and iOS 10 - basic stuff on stage now. Tim talking about sales, and how big the iOS 10 launch is.

Apple Watch ceramic

10.53 - Tim is back on stage to talk iPhone. The 'Gold Standard' in the industry apparently.

Apple Watch Series 2 - designed for runners

10.51 - Apparently, this is just the start of exciting things to come, says Edwards. Jeff is back on stage, telling us that the watch will start at $369, and the Nike+ will be £369.

The old watches - series one - will have the same dual core processor and be $269 - pre order from September 9 and on sale from September 16. However, the Nike+ version will be available in late October.

10.47 - He's talking about how complex running watches are - completely disagree that current watches are too complex - and apparently they don't allow you to just easily start a run. There's a short cut on the new Apple Watch Series 2 - you can even ask Siri to get your running.

There's simple and advanced mode too - that could be good. But there's also motivation - insightful invitations are made just for you. It'll even let you know when your friends are out running.

People that run on Sundays, they say, are people that are more active. 'Just Do It Sundays' is a thing to incite people to run... sounds like it could be something else though...

Nike Plus

10.45 - Faster, brighter, water-resistant, GPS - those are the big upgrades. But how much will it cost and when can we get it?

Apple says it's going to be brilliant for runners - let's see about that given how bad the first one was. But Apple has partnered with Nike, working with them to announce Apple Watch Nike Plus.

Is this what the team's been working on for months? At least that'll work with the platform I use all the time - I might actually start using this Watch if it's a decent experience.

Trevor Edwards from Nike is on stage, the President telling us that he's looking forward to serving every athlete.

Apple

10.44 - There's also a stainless steel and aluminum versions, as well as the high end Hermes one - but that ceramic one looks amazing. And it's four times stronger than stainless steel too.

10.43 - The GPS will tell you if you wander too far from the proper route - Jeff is back telling us that there's a wide variety of styles for the Apple Watch Series 2 - new models including a ceramic watch.

10.41 - Hannah from Viewranger is showing us how you can use the Watch to hike around. Offlinedirections on the watch - but will it have an altimeter to tell you how high you are?

pple watch

10.39 - There's a dual core processor and it's 50% faster - with 60 frame per second on the wrist. This is going to make a lot more impressive apps.

And the display is twice as bright, and it's 1000 nits. That's massive - in fact, it's the brightest Apple has ever shipped on a device.

And - finally - GPS is on board. No more need for the phone when you're running. It'll apparently have a fast GPS connections, and there will be a heat map to show you your run and how fast you were - and where.

10.37 - There's new swimming workouts within the watch itself - and the watch will learn about you over time, and your individual stroke efficiency. Be interesting to see if swimmers do love this, given the running community wasn't impressed last year.

Apple watch

10.35 - This watch is going to be 'swim-proof', which means you can wear it swimming, surfing or water resistant for 50 metres. So it can be at a depth of 50 metres. Challenging for a smartwatch to make sure all the 'entry points' - except for the speaker.

Apple WAtch series 2

So for series 2, the speaker system, at the end of the workout the speaker will eject the water. We saw that for the iPhone as a rumor before, so that much be where it came out.

10.34 - We're seeing Apple Watch 2 now - the next generation of Apple Watch. It's going to be waterproof at least.

It's going to be called Apple Watch - series 2.

10.33 - Ah, it'll apparently only work when you're in a 'workout' - which means you'll get exercise properly at the same time. It'll be shipping by the end of the year.

10.29 - Apparently Pokemon Trainers have walked 4.6 billion miles since the launch. But they only tracked 1 billion, probably.

Pokemon Go

Hanke is showing the Pokemon Go Plus band on stage... this all feels too little, too late. Let's see what happens there...

Now the Watch app shows your level, the CP needed for the next level and how far the egg needs to be walked. And you can see which Pokemon are near. And then you'll be told when there's a Pokestop or Pokemon to be caught with a tap on your wrist. And you can swipe from your wrist.

10.28 - Pokemon Go is coming to the Apple Watch - bit late - but John Hanke is on stage. 'It's been a busy summer for us at Niantic'... he's not wrong there. Do people care anymore?

10.27 - Going through updates on the WatchOS 3 - new apps are coming for the new platform, using the new developer tools and sensors to improve your fitness and gaming experience.

10.25 - Jeff Williams on stage to talk Apple Watch 2. He's beginning with WatchOS 3 - come on Jeff, we know all this.

Apple

10.24 - Talking up the benefits now - how Apple Watch 'has changed what people expect from a watch. Apple is now the second highest seller of watches in the world (behind Rolex) in 2015... which is actually pretty impressive. And obviously the number one smartwatch.

Apparently customers love the Apple Watch, which might surprise some. There's nothing wrong with it, but some people still prefer their own timepieces.

10.23 - It's time for new products! Beginning with Apple Watch. By the way, Tim totally has a cold.

Apple iPhone leak, Mario coming to iOS

10.22 - It's hard to care about this collaboration on screen when we already know there's a new iPhone coming. However it does look good to see this collaboration working together, on Mac, iPad, iPhone or web - but this isn't the first time it's happened.

10.20 - Real time collaboration is now part of the mix - and they're going to try and demo it onstage. WAIT - MORE IMPORTANT THAN THAT - Apple just leaked the whole new iPhone on its Twitter feed apparently (it's now been deleted).

iPhone7

Water-resistant, stereo speakers, and still called the iPhone 7. Interesting.

10.18 - There's a beauty to the simplicity and joy when talking about Mario on the iPhone - you can battle with friends and others around the world on the go too - although the weird bit about 'impressing Toads' sounds odd.

It'll be a set price, meaning there won't be in app upgrades to purchase. That's decent.

Next up: a talk about iWork.

Nitendo

10.09 - Mario is coming to the App Store! Nintendo is giving up its plan to not be on mobile... Shigeru Minamoto from Nintendo - the big Daddy - is on stage. People are losing their sh*t here.

He's talking up how Mario has surpassed all platforms he's encountered. 'Let's go, iPhone!'

10.07 - 140 billion apps have been downloaded, and there's a 106% increase in app downloads. And it's generated twice the revenue than Google Play - 'this, of course, is great for users', intones Tim, while he clears his throat. He's got a tickle there.

10.06 - You'll be able to watch the Apple Music iTunes Festival from your Apple devices when it's streamed from London. Oh, that's all done now. We're onto apps now.

10.05 - 'Some great things to show us' - and we're starting with Apple Music, says Tim. 17 million subscribers now apparently.

Tim cook

10.03 - He's coming on stage now! On the video he's come in through a backstage entrance and then come on in real life! He was going to put on the sunglasses that were in the video - comedy ones - but he's too classy for that, throwing them offstage.

10.00 -Tim is doing a bit on screen with James Corden, doing Carpool Karaoke. He's mocking internet leaks and put Pharrell Williams in the back. Baller.

09.45 - Rhianna has just started playing, is it a sign? Probably not, it's just good clean pop. I can see Eddy Cue, bet he loves a bit of Rhi Rhi.

Apple iPhone 7 launch event

09.35 - Don't forget you can watch along live, but do keep an eye on our liveblog here for expert analysis, witty remarks and Apple-speak translations. In other news, Jimmy Iovine will be sitting in front of me (he must be running late, his chair is still empty).

09.30 - In my seat, and things look very different to WWDC. We're hearing the announcement will last at least 90 minutes, so make sure you're sitting comfortably. I certainly am.

Apple iPhone 7 launch event

09.15 - I've arrived! Badge in hand, and a song in my heart. Black badge = black iPhone? Maybe.

Apple launch event

07.40 - Good morning Mr Cook! Not a bad looking photo there - shot on an iPhone 7 by any chance?

Apple iPhone launch event

06.00 - What will the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus look like? Are Jony Ive and Apple about to pull a whole new design language out the bag, or are we're going to stick with the rounded slab which has served it well since the iPhone 6?

It seems it's the latter which is going to win out today, with leaked shots claiming to show the new iPhone revealing slightly tweaked antenna bands, larger camera senses, and not a lot else.

05.00 - There will be quite a few people wanting to know the iPhone 7 release date and iPhone 7 price. Here at TechRadar we can have the best deals sent direct to you, so you get the new iPhone for a great price. Just pop your email address in the form below, sit back, and wait for the deals to roll in.

Loading iPhone 7 widget...

04.00 - LIGHT THE BEACONS. ALERT THE ELDERS. The Apple Store is down. It happens every time the firm holds an event, and every time it sends a tingle down our spine. We're not sure why, because we know the reason behind it - Apple's getting all its new product pages ready for us.

What it does mean is we're just hours away now. Six, to be exact.

Apple iPhone launch

03.00 - As Tim Cook rolls over in bed, his wireless AirPods fall out of his ears. The audiobook he was listening to before falling asleep automatically pauses when it senses the pods are no longer lodged in the Apple leader's ears.

On his nightstand sits an iPhone, but not one you've seen before. Its blue-ish tint bounces the moonlight creeping through the curtains onto the large mirror at the foot of his bed, filling the room with an ambient glow.

At least, that's what we assume is happening. Talk of new headphones is rife, with potentially wireless earbuds with built-in heart rate sensors being included in the box. That would be great, but we're not sure Apple is prepared to take that leap just yet.

Something we're a little more confident about, though, is a new color (or colors) for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

00.13 - As the clock ticks over into September 7, Apple has finally made use of its new Twitter account to say "Today's the day" as it teases its special event.
