Disney is Seriously Trying to Screw Up Mulan

When Disney announced a live-action remake of one of their classics “Mulan,” people were excited, but many were also concerned. With the prevalence of Hollywood Whitewashing with Ghost in the Shell and The Great Wall, many were scared Mulan would suffer the same fate.

When rumors started to spread of Mulan being played by Jennifer Lawrence, people expectantly flipped out and a petition was started, which has racked up over 100,000 signatures.

Then, Disney gave us a pleasant surprise when they announced that they were working hard to hunt down a Chinese actress to play the coveted role. And fans of Asian descent and its supporters gave a collective sigh of relieve.

Just when we all thought Disney was finally taking a huge step in giving Asian actors better roles in movies, a early draft of the script gets leaked and it proves Hollywood still has a LONG way to go.

The film allegedly centers the story around Mulan’s white male love interest. They pretty much sideline the legendary female warrior for the white savior, according to Angry Asian Man. In an open letter to Disney, he wrote:

“The man is a 30-something European trader who initially cares only for the pleasure of women and money. The only reason why he and his entourage decide to help the Chinese Imperial Army is because he sets eyes on Mulan. That’s right. Our white savior has come to the aid of Ancient China due to a classic case of Yellow Fever. In this script written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, more than half of its pages are dedicated to this merchant who develops a mutual attraction with Mulan and fights to protect her in the ensuing battles. To top it all off, this man gets the honor of defeating the primary enemy of China, not Mulan. Way to steal a girl’s thunder.”

What the hell is this fuckery!? Whitewashing aside, why in the world does Mulan need saving my ANY man anyways? Ami right ladies!?

While this is just an early leaked drafted and the final product could indeed be different when it comes time to shoot, I think we all agree that Disney better not mess this up!
