Just like other animals, horses display silly behavior at times. Each “silly” behavior indicates the personality of the horse. Lip-smacking is one of the horse behaviors. Root, a horse, is a lip-smacker. He stands in his stall, secured with cross ties. Horse flaps his lips together continually producing a rubbery and smacking sounds. The humans standing nearby break into a hearty laughter. Lip-flapping is an indication of problems such as agitation, colic, discomfort, anxiety or stress. An experienced horse trainer can pinpoint the actual problem. However, Root did not have any problem. His flapping was a way of relaxing since he had been fed and watered.
