Sample Footage: See Laowa’s Super Weird Macro Lens in Action

Remember that crazy macro ‘relay’ lens Venus Optics showed off at Photokina? The Laowa 24mm f/14 Relay lens looks more like a rifle barrel than a camera lens, and now we finally get to see what it can do.

Yesterday, Venus Optics released some sample footage of the Laowa 24mm f/14 Relay in action, showing you how this lens helps you get closer to your tiny subjects without startling them… even if your subject is underwater.

Yes, you read that right. It turns out the Laowa 24mm lens will come with a “Waterproof Cap” that will let you dip the lens a couple of feet down and capture underwater macro photography while you hang out on dry land. Here’s a longer cut of underwater and above ground sample footage captured with the Relay lens:

The videos are just a sneak peek. There’s still no word on how much Venus Optics will charge for this strange lens when it’s officially released “sometime in 2017,” but you’ll know just as soon as we do.
