China is Building the ‘World’s Longest’ Coastal Road

A massive coastal road project connecting 14 cities will soon rise in a province in China.

According to Nanfang Daily (via China Daily), the road to be built in Guangdong Province will be the longest coastal road in the world with its planned length of almost 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers). The proposed road is slated to be longer than the 656-mile long California State Route 1 in the United States.

The Chinese road’s construction, which will start at the Zhanjiang section of the massive stretch, is set to kick off before 2018. The section, which is over 500 kilometers in length, will take up about a third of the entire project.

Once completed, the road will connect Zhanjiang to the cities Maoming, Yangjiang, Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Huizhou, Shanwei, Jieyang, Shantou, and Chaozhou.

Divided into four different sections, the stretch will consist of coastal urban areas; tourism and sightseeing; beautiful villages; and landscape transitions. In addition to the driving lane, the road will also include bicycle lanes.

Travelers will get to enjoy a scenic route as the road will be passing through 90 tourist attractions, which include Nan’ao Bay, Xunliao Bay, Hailing Island, and Fangji Island.

Over 1,000 kilometers of the project will be comprised of a newly constructed section road while 600 kilometers of it will be renovated road.

It is worth noting, however, that while China’s proposed road will be the longest stretch of coastal road in the world, it will not be the longest route. Currently, the world’s longest coastal route is Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, which spans 1600 miles (2600 km).
