Canadian Sikh Politician Awkwardly Mistaken for a Muslim by Racist Heckler During Meet and Greet

A racist heckler recently tried to grill Canadian politician Jagmeet Singh at his meet and greet campaign on Wednesday in what is considered to be a rather awkward encounter.

Singh, a Sikh who is currently running to be the leader of the federal NDP, organized a meet and greet for supporters last week in Brampton, Ontario, Canada as part of his campaign. However, before he could say hello to the audience, a racist woman suddenly approached him in front of the crowd and began her racial tirade against the man.

According to BuzzFeed news, the woman, who identifies herself as Jennifer, accused Singh of being “in bed with Sharia” and the Muslim Brotherhood. And this is the part where it gets really awkward. Singh is not Muslim, he’s Sikh.

The Sharia that Jennifer mentioned in her tirade is the law that Islam follows, which is referred to as the “Sharia Law.” While Sikh, on the other hand, is someone who follows the practice of Sikhism, a monotheistic religion that originated in the Punjab region of India.

The woman continued to interrupt Singh as he tries to check if his mic is working properly; not giving him the chance to speak, as seen on the video captured by local news site Brampton Focus. Several of Singh’s handlers tried to move her aside but she threatened them and said she’d call the police immediately if they try to touch her.

Despite what was happening, the 38-year-old Canadian politician kept his cool and talks over the irate woman saying: “What do we believe in? Love and courage.”

After four minutes of racial tirade and awkward presumption about Singh’s religious affiliation, Jennifer backed down and decided to leave.

“You know growing up as a brown-skin, turbanned, bearded man, that I’ve faced things like this before. It’s not a problem. We can deal with it,” he said soon after the woman left. “There’s going to be other obstacles that we’re going to face and we’re going to face them with love and courage.”
