Kathryn Bigelow used an old bank vault as her workspace while on scholarship with the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program. Quentin Tarantino wrote scripts in between shifts at the register of his local video store. These visionary directors — and many more of their ilk — rose to greatness from humble beginnings, and they did so not solely through a traditional film school education, but by immersing themselves in the filmmaking process and the language of film (even if those films were scrappy, schlocky, and obscure).
