This is the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus
Apple on Tuesday introduced a new iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 8.
Like its predecessor, the iPhone 7, the iPhone 8 comes in two different versions — a standard 4.7-inch model, and a larger 5.5-inch "Plus" model.
"This is a huge step forward for the iPhone," Apple CEO Tim Cook said of the new phone.
Apple is offering the two iPhone 8 models in three different colors — silver, "space gray," and a new gold color. The base versions of each model now come with 64 GB of storage space. The iPhone 8 models have a slightly different design than the iPhone 7 — they have glass on both the front and back — but look similar.
Here they are:
"These are a new generation of iPhone, and they improve on everything we love about iPhone," Apple's Eddy Cue said of the iPhone 8.
Like previous updates to the iPhone, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have upgrades across the board: including better-looking and stronger screens, more capable cameras, and a more powerful processor.
- Both the iPhone 8's 4.7-inch screen and the iPhone 8 Plus' 5.5-inch screen are "retina" HD displays, making them the highest resolution ever offered on an iPhone.
- The iPhone 8's updated camera is capable of shooting the highest-quality video of any iPhone before it, Cue said. It can capture in ultra-high resolution 4K but at a faster frame rate than previous iPhones. It's also capable of capturing slow motion video at super-high frame rates — 240 frames per second at 1080p resolution.
- The new chip inside the iPhone 8 models is named the A11 "Bionic," and Apple says it's the most powerful smartphone chip ever. It's approximately 25% faster than the A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7 models.
Here's a look at both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus:
Another major addition is the iPhone 8's ability to be charged wirelessly. You'll be able to simply place your new iPhone 8 or 8 Plus on a wireless charging spot to recharge its battery, without needing to plug in a power cord. Though many other smartphones offer this capability, the iPhone 8 models will be the first iPhones to support it.
Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support wireless charging specifically because the back of the phone is glass, Cue said. Though there are several different "standards" for wireless charging, Apple said it's using the most common one: Qi (pronounced "chi").
The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus start at $699, and they arrive on September 22, Apple said.
