Indonesian Domestic Worker Falls 7 Stories While ‘Cleaning Windows’ in Singapore

Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is now investigating the case of an Indonesian domestic worker who fell from the seventh floor of her employer’s condominium while cleaning windows.

The incident happened on October 3 when the maid, who is believed to be in her 20s, lost her balance while cleaning the window in Carissa Park condominium in Tampines.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force dispatched an ambulance to 2 Flora Drive on Tuesday at around 12:05 p.m. local time, The New Paper reported.

The severely injured maid was taken to Changi General Hospital where she received treatment for her injuries, according to The Independent Singapore.

Her employer, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed to reporters that the Indonesian domestic worker has only been working in Singapore for about a month. The only person who was with her at the time of the incident was an elderly woman.

Shin Min Daily News via Straits Times reported that the Indonesian embassy in Singapore is now in contact with all related parties in the country and back in Indonesia. The maid is reportedly recovering from her injuries.

“The Embassy has repeatedly reminded all FDWs (foreign domestic workers) to refrain from chores that may endanger themselves, such as cleaning windows in a high rise building. We have also requested agencies and employers for their cooperation on this matter,” a spokesperson from MOM said in a statement.

“(It) awaits the outcome of the Police’s and Ministry of Manpower’s investigation on this tragic accident and will take further necessary steps from there.“

Although the Ministry of Manpower released a statement in 2012 regarding not allowing maids clean the outer part of windows without supervision, several helpers continue to fall from high floors every year.
