The World’s Most Expensive Rice is in Singapore and Costs $50 a Pound

Singapore is set to become one of the first countries outside Japan to sell what’s touted as the world’s most expensive rice.

Kinmemai Premium rice earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records, with a price tag of 149 Singapore dollars ($109) per kilogram, or around $50 per pound.

What makes the rice blend so special is that it contains award-winning grains from all over Japan, including Gunma, Gifu, Kumamoto, Nagano and Niigata prefectures.

The rice grains from this blend are matured for six months which makes it more nutritious, and gives it enhanced texture with a sweeter flavor than other brands, according to Channel NewsAsia.

Kinmemai already has two rice blends in stock, namely the Better White which retails for 9.40 Singapore dollars ($6.88) per 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds), and the Better Brown which costs 9.80 Singapore dollars ($7.18) per 1 kilogram.

While the premium rice blend can be ordered online at www.kinmemai.com at $155 Singapore dollars ($113.63) for a box of six 140-gram packs on November 1, it’s also being planned for a Hong Kong release starting next year.

Customers with expensive tastes could try mixing Kinmemai along with the world’s most expensive chili. People with even more discerning taste buds could also step their meal price up a notch by indulging themselves in the world’s priciest beef noodle soup, which can be found in Taiwan.
