  • Google's new Pixel 2 phone is making weird clicking and high-pitched whining noises, customers say.
  • It comes after multiple reports of problems with the Google Pixel 2 XL's screen.
  • Google has confirmed it's looking into the issue.

The headaches for Google's latest flagship smartphones keep on coming.

After multiple reports of screen issues in the larger Pixel 2 XL devices, some customers now say that their Pixel 2 phones are making a weird high-pitched clicking noise.

Earlier in October, Google launched the Pixel 2, its new flagship, iPhone-rivalling smartphone. It comes in two sizes, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, and has been critically acclaimed — but its rollout has been marred by technical issues.

There have been complaints from some customers about apparent screen burn-in on the Pixel 2 XL, where "ghosts" of images and icons remain on the screen (e.g. a faint residual navigation bar appearing at all times). There has also been criticism about its white balance, and graininess on some screens.

The smaller Pixel 2 hasn't had the same screen issues — but now some users say it is making a clicking or high-pitched whining when in use. There are more than 100 posts in a thread discussing it on Google's product support forum (which we saw via Android Police).

"Whenever the phone is unlocked, I can hear a constant ticking (like the second hand of a watch) if the phone is against my ear. Doesn't happen when the screen is off, or when the screen is on but the phone is locked," one user wrote.

A third added: "I have the same issue during phone calls. It is constant digital interference noises consisting of beeps and clicks. The noise does not get louder or softer with the volume changes. It stays the same. You can also hear the noise using the speakerphone but it is more difficult to hear. If I use a wired headset the noise is not there."

A Google spokesperson told Business Insider the company is aware of the reports and is looking into the issue.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are made by different companies — HTC and LG respectively — which may explain why the two aren't experiencing identical problems. But for both devices to beset by issues is an embarrassing setback for Google as it doubles down on its attempts to establish itself as a quality smartphone brand.
