Indian Toddler Becomes Best Friends With Over a Dozen Monkeys, Baffles Entire Village

Samarth Bangari, a 2-year-old boy from Allapur near Bangalore, India, is being dubbed as the “modern-day Mowgli” from “The Jungle Book” for his very unusual friendship with a gang of wild langur monkeys.

Bangari’s unusual bond with nearly two dozen gray langurs was first spotted when he was playing with the animals alone in his village, which is located about 400 kilometers (250 miles) from Bangalore, AFP reported via AsiaOne.

His uncle, Barama Reddy, feared that he could get attacked by the 20 monkeys. But it turned out that the langurs were actually calm in the presence of the boy, who liked to share his food with them.

The group of langur monkeys reportedly kept returning to the village everyday to visit their friend Bangari, and would sometimes wake the boy up if he was asleep.

“Since that day, the monkeys haven’t missed a day. They come to the house around the same time,“ Reddy told AFP. “Even if he is sleeping, they first wake him up, and then sit with him for an hour or two.“

The “strange” friendship between Bangari and the langur monkeys has clearly drawn interest from other villagers, with some reportedly visiting the house to catch a glimpse of the boy and his friends.

A child was put beside Bangari to see if it would also develop a connection with the monkeys. However, the group showed aggressive behavior towards the new face.

The villagers concluded that the boy is the only person in the village who can communicate with the monkeys on some level because of his “special bond” with them.

“Everyone thinks that he is special and they are communicating with each other, and can understand what is being said,” Reddy told reporters.
