He Uses Microsoft Excel to Create Amazing Anime Art
Another artist in Japan is proving that there is more to spreadsheet programs than just being boring office tools.
Similar to the elderly Japanese artist Tatsuo Horiuchi, known as the “Michelangelo of Excel”, Twitter user Maruraba_2 has begun using the spreadsheet program to make his own amazing works of art. But instead of crafting breathtaking pieces of scenic art like Horiuchi, Maruraba has been busy making impressive Excel drawings of Anime characters.
His latest spreadsheet illustration, which he posted on his Twitter account, is a portrait of “Girls und Panzer “ star Miho Nishino.
Girls und Panzer, which features high school girls competing in armored tank combat, is among the most popular anime shows recently. Despite using a program people often use to make pies and graphs, he definitely did justice to Miho Nishino.
Maruraba also perfectly captured the image of high schooler Sagiri Izumi from Eromanga Sensei, who is another fan-favorite.
How he is able to make the eyes of adorable Kyouko Toshinou of Yuru Yuri glimmer in the picture below is absolutely amazing:
He is also able to make some Anime hair effects without the need of an illustration software. Check out his drawing of Rize from ”Is the Order A Rabbit?”:
Using Excel, he was able to capture two different emotions expressed by Blend S characters Mafuyu and Maika:
His drawing of Mashimo Munetani from High School Fleet is also spot on:
Here’s his take on snake-girl Tsuchinoko, a popular character from mobile game hit Kemono Friends:
According to Soranews24, whenever Maruraba is asked which type of art software he would recommend, he always endorses “Excel,” his artistic tool of choice. It may seem like a crazy recommendation for some, but for a skillful disciple of the arts such as Maruraba, what’s important is not just about the tool but also how one can utilize it for his vision.
