She Stole a Bar of Soap 18 Years Ago, Now She’s Paying It Back x100

A 30-year-old woman from Yichuan in central China’s Henan province recently made the news after she paid back the bar of soap she stole 18 years ago with 100 bars of the same kind.

The woman, only identified by her surname Qu, went to the store where she shoplifted a bar of soap back when she was only 12. She brought large quantities of the same papaya-scented soap in a box that she stole nearly a couple of decades ago.

Qu, in the video posted online by Chinese media Btime on social media, can be heard explaining how she resorted to stealing the bar of soap back when she was young. She said she did it because it was the brand/type of soap that her mom really wanted but couldn’t afford.

She felt guilty all throughout these years. So in order to lift the weight on her conscience, she returned what she took in hundredfold.

“This mistake has been a weight on my heart all of these years. Because it is the worst thing that I’ve ever done in my life,” the woman said as translated by Shanghaiist via Medium.

However, instead of accepting Qu’s kind gesture, the shop owner, who was deeply moved after hearing her story, decided to give all the bars of soap to the local sanitation workers.
