Elderly Man Attacked in Chicago Chinatown May Have Permanent Brain Damage
The family of a 91-year-old Chicago man who was the victim of an unprovoked attack that occurred near Chinatown in September fears that he may have sustained permanent brain damage.
Yen Jit Wong suffe red head injuries after being sucker punched with a closed fist by 45-year-old Alexander Taylor as he was strolling along Wentworth Avenue near 24th Street on Sept. 18, according to ABC7 Eyewitness News.
He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for treatment but has reportedly been transferred to a rehab facility where he is undergoing extensive physical therapy.
However, doctors told one of Wong’s grandsons, Lau, that his condition has also not gotten any better. The elderly man can’t stay awake for more than two hours a day and has been getting his nutrition through a tube due to difficulties swallowing.
Taylor has been charged with three felony counts — one count of aggravated battery of a victim over the age of 60, one account of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and one account of aggravated battery in a public place.
“I just hope criminals like these stay off the streets. They don’t contribute to anything but pain and grief,” Lau said about Taylor. “We get the sense that our grandfather will never be the same.”
