Father With Cancer Makes the Ultimate Sacrifice to Save Daughter Who Also Has Cancer
A Chinese father made the ultimate sacrifice by refusing to undergo cancer treatment in order to save his own daughter who was also diagnosed with cancer.
Sun Ying, a 21-year-old student at Henan Normal University, was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2015 – just a year after it was discovered that her father had lung cancer, according to Lianhe Wanbao as translated by AsiaOne.
Since the family’s financial situation was tight, Sun Ying’s father made the decision to discontinue the treatment for his own cancer so that his daughter could have her stem cell transplant that she needed. Unfortunately, his cancer got worse and metastasized. The father eventually died from his illness in December 2015.
Because of his sacrifice, Sun Ying was able to get all of her treatments. She reportedly underwent over 30 chemotherapy and 20 radiotherapy sessions without ever compromising her studies, China News reported. In fact, neither her school nor her classmates knew about her condition as she only went to the hospital during weekends.
However, her classmates knew that she had to undergo surgeries and that she was frequently unwell; despite all of this, she still performed well in her studies with outstanding results.
Sun Ying, who once was a petite 45 kilograms (99 pounds), reportedly gained 18 kilograms (39 pounds) of weight during her sessions and lost all of her hair in the process.
She also had three relapses in the three-year period of her treatment beginning in 2015 to 2018. She then suffered a high fever that left her lying in bed for five months, which required her mother to apply for extended leave from her school.
At this point, Sun Ying was close to giving up, but after learning her condition, her teachers and friends encouraged her and helped raise 100,000 yuan ($14,900) for her treatment. Sun Ying finally found the courage to continue her fight with cancer.
“After seeing everyone’s efforts to help me, I do not want to give up. Even if I die, I cannot bear to leave my mother behind,” she told Chinese media.
Sun Ying eventually decided to document the journey through colorful comics which chronicle the experience, from the time she was diagnosed with cancer to the battle she’s currently having while undergoing treatment.
The 21-year-old student hopes that these comics will help those who are also fighting cancer and encourage them to continue the battle through their treatment.
Sun Ying is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Doctors are reportedly waiting for her condition to improve before they can begin the stem cell transplant.
