BLACKPINK is Now the Biggest Music Act in the World, Bloomberg Says
K-Pop group BLACKPINK has been named the world’s biggest music act after topping Bloomberg’s Pop Star Power Rankings.
- Bloomberg trailed four-week album sales, digital song streams, YouTube views, and 30-day total interactions on Instagram to rank 25 of the biggest musical acts in the world. Live show ticket sales remained a category despite being uncounted for all artists given the unique circumstances the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the live show industry in 2020.
- BLACKPINK ranked #9 in album sales, #2 in streams on Spotify, and #1 in YouTube views to take the top spot of #1 in the world.
- BLACKPINK, managed by YG Entertainment, debuted in August 2016 with members Rosé, Lisa, Jisoo, and Jennie. The group’s fanbase is known as “Blink”.
- Spotify’s co-head of music, Jeremy Erlich, spoke to Bloomberg regarding the rapid rise in popularity of K-Pop in the U.S. “Language doesn’t seem to be a barrier in today’s world. K-Pop has really broken into mainstream culture.”
- Fellow K-Pop group BTS ranked #32 in album sales, #14 in streams on Spotify, and #2 in YouTube views to rank at #10 in the world.

Both BLACKPINK and BTS have enjoyed chart topping success in 2020 despite not being able to tour in the U.S. because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- In August 2020, BTS became the first all-South Korean group to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group shattered YouTube and iTunes records in the same month for their single “Dynamite”.
- In July 2020, BLACKPINK set the new record for “Most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours,” “Most viewed music video on YouTube in 24 hours” and “Most viewed YouTube music video in 24 hours by a K-Pop group,” according to Guinness World Records.
- In January 2020, BLACKPINK made history as the first K-Pop group to reach 1 billion views on YouTube. The same year, fellow K-Pop acts Red Velvet, Oh My Girl, Sunmi and Tiffany Young also toured in the U.S.
