Good morning! This is the tech news you need to know this Tuesday.
- Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed the car maker is restarting its Fremont factory against local rules. Last month, Musk said shutdowns designed to slow the spread of the virus were "fascist" and un-American.
- Tesla has sued Alameda County over the closure of its factory. Tesla alleged the shutdown ignores an earlier order from California's governor that permits businesses in "16 crucial infrastructure industries," including transportation, to continue work.
- Bill Gates said he warned Trump about the dangers of a pandemic in December 2016 before he took office. Gates met with 2016 presidential candidates to tell them to make pandemic preparedness a national priority, The Wall Street Journal reported.
- Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has left the company completely as he takes on government projects like military tech and the COVID-19 response, according to CNET. The 65-year-old remained on Google's board until last year.
- The CEO of SoftBank-backed startup Banjo has resigned after his hidden neo-Nazi past surfaced. The state of Utah suspended a $20 million contract with Banjo after CEO Damien Patton's hidden neo-Nazi past was unearthed last month.
- Apple's iPhone 12 may finally get a faster screen to match the speed some Android phones have had for a while. Apple's new iPhone 12, rumored to launch this fall, may come with a faster screen that should make scrolling feel smoother, says a new leak.
- Twitter has added a new board member, AI expert Fei-Fei Li, who left Google amid controversy surrounding the company's military contracts. Li had taken heat for her involvement in Google's work building AI drone imaging tools for the US military, which it abandoned after employee outcry.
- UK startups have warned of substantial job losses if they are unable to access a government rescue fund for early-stage companies during the pandemic. In a letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, 30 founders and CEOs warned the £250 million ($300 million) Future Fund scheme essentially rules out firms who have participated in US accelerators such as Y Combinator.
- Silicon Valley billionaire Eric Schmidt predicts that companies will need more office space after the pandemic, not less. The 65-year-old former Google CEO made the prediction during an appearance on "Face the Nation" on Sunday.
- San Francisco-based tech startup Intricately has raised a $4 million Series A financing led by Counterpart Ventures. The company builds digital infrastructure for cloud users to better understand product usage.
