Gas prices have climbed in 2021. In fact, gas prices are at a level they haven't been at since 2014 according to AAA.

The following chart using data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) also highlights just how the price of gas in the US has increased over 2021:

According to EIA data, gas prices were $3.19 per gallon as of October 4, 2021, an increase of $1.02 from a year ago. As seen in the chart, the last time US gas prices were about this high was October 13, 2014, when the price of gas was about $3.21 per gallon.

CNBC reported on this high price of gas Americans are experiencing right now, reporting that AAA data shows the average price of gas was $3.22 on Wednesday. According to AAA, an increase in demand and the price of crude oil may in part explain the increase seen recently.

"Global economic uncertainty and supply chain concerns caused by the lingering COVID-19 pandemic could be playing a role in keeping crude oil prices elevated," Andrew Gross, an AAA spokesperson, said. "But, there may be some relief on the horizon due to the news that OPEC and its allies might ramp up production increases faster than previously agreed."

Gas prices vary depending on where you live in the US.

This map shows the price of regular gasoline per gallon as of October 4, 2021 using data from the US Energy Information Administration. The map is split into Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts, or PADD regions, where each state belongs to a region. We highlighted the prices for the sub-PADDs that make up the East Coast, as the EIA data shows that prices differ within the East Coast region.

Regular gas prices in the West Coast PADD were higher than other regions at $3.94 per gallon. EIA reports that the price of gas in this PADD region is $3.59 per gallon when you exclude California. Regular gas prices in the Lower Atlantic PADD, which includes states like Florida and Georgia, were $2.98 per gallon.

The price also varies within states. CNBC reports, using AAA data, for instance that in Mono County, California, the average price of gas is over $5 per gallon.

Prices in each PADD region are higher than they were at the start of 2021. The following map shows how much gas prices per gallon have gone up from January 4, 2021 to October 4, 2021:

The Rocky Mountains PADD and the West Coast PADD have seen the biggest changes over this time period with increases of more than a dollar.
