RESULTS: Maine holds gubernatorial and congressional primaries
Maine is holding statewide, congressional, and state legislative primaries on Tuesday. Polls close at 8 p.m. ET.
The races and the stakes:
Incumbent Democratic Gov. Janet Mills will face off against former Gov. Paul LePage in the fall, with both running unopposed for their parties' nominations.
Mills was elected in 2018 to succeed LePage after two terms. LePage — whose tenure as governor from 2011 to 2019 was marked by ultraconservative policies, feuds with state lawmakers, and a constant supply of bombastic and inflammatory statements — is now mounting a political comeback for his old job.
Election forecasters at the Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato's Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia Center for Politics have rated the Maine governor's race as "leans Democratic" going into November.
Maine's two Democratic House representatives, Rep. Chellie Pingree and Rep. Jared Golden, are running unopposed in their primaries.
Former Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who Golden defeated in 2018, and local elected official Elizabeth Caruso are competing for the Republican nomination to face Golden in the general election for Maine's 2nd District. The race for the highly competitive 2nd District is rated as a tossup by all three major election forecasters.
