Sad 89-year-old grandpa sells ice cream for a living. Then customer hands him a $100k check
After seeing an 89-years-old street vendor struggling to push his cart of frozen treats, a Good Samaritan stepped up and changed this elderly man’s life.
Joel Cervantes Macias was driving through the Little Village area in Chicago when he saw Fidencio Sanchez having a hard time pushing his ice cream cart. Macias, a restaurant owner who grew up in Chicago, but now lives in Wisconsin, said the sight of Sanchez broke his heart. He says it was emotional for him because the elderly man was still working despite his old age.
Macias took a photo of the man and posted it on Facebook with the caption, ‘I respect this man to the fullest! #workflow #dyingbreed.’ The kind soul then bought 20 ice cream bars from the old man before he drove off.
After a few days, the image Macias took captured the hearts of hundreds as the post went viral. With the help of a friend, he then started a GoFundMe page to make life easier for Sanchez and his wife, Eladia. Macias started the GoFundMe campaign with the goal of raising just $3,00o, but it soon passed that.
The campaign eventually raised over $100,000 to help aid this man.
Sanchez spent years of life selling ice cream around the neighborhood. He working several hours each day, earning about $50-$60 a day. Sanchez had retired two months ago, but returned to work after their only daughter passed away in July.
On top of losing their daughter, Sanchez’s wife had also become ill and was unable to sell ice cream anymore. The GoFundMe was more than just money to the elderly man, it was a sense of security and a helping hand in time of need.
It’s amazing to think that donations came from more than 5,600 people. Gustavo Gutierrez, a community member, says, “The entire community [of] Little Village knows about Mr. Fidencio because for decades he’s always been selling.”
As to how Sanchez plans to spend his money, he says he plans to use it to take care of his wife, share it with the church, and his grandchildren who recently lost their mother.
To answer the question if Sanchez will continue working, he said it is not likely, but it’s possible because he enjoys the fresh air.
