Teen spots a girl trapped in the flooded river beneath a bridge, jumps in and saves her
Running late to school can sometimes be a good thing. Here’s a story about how a teen’s tardiness saved a young girl’s life.
The young teen, Angus Pauley was running late for school and requested that his mom drove him to school. As they were on their way to school, Angus noticed a young child struggling in the river. Despite being late for school, the teen didn’t think twice before asking him mom to pull over.
Pauley ran to the bridge and then asked the young girl, “Are you okay?” With the girl’s response as, “I need my mom,” Angus knew something wasn’t right. The teen then immediately stripped down into his underwear and jumped into the ice cold river.
As to why she was in the river, the young child was trying to use the footbridge, but was unfortunately knocked down. As Angus jumped into the waters, the girl kept getting pushed farther and father down stream. Angus continued his pursuit trying to catch up to the girl, but things got scary when she got sucked under water.
The teen said during that moment he counted, “One… two… and she popped back up.” It was a scary moment but luckily, Angus wasn’t the only rescuer who jumped into the waters. Another hero, Jeremy McKenzie also jumped into the waters to save the girl.
McKenzie jumped in a little after Angus, but he jumped in further down stream to support the two as they drifted down. With the help of McKenzie and Pauley, the young girl was successfully rescued. All three individuals were then transported to Wairau hospital with no serious injuries.
Police have no doubt that Angus and Jeremy are heroes. With their interview at the courtroom, Sgt. Mark Lucas said, “All of the officers here who dealt with it today, have nothing but praise for two rescuers for putting their lives at risk.”
An incredible story about two men going beyond the call of duty. It’s kind of funny how Angus running late to school led to this girl’s rescue. An amazing act from two very brave individuals.
