HTC's new VR headset doesn't require a PC
Feeling less than impressed with using virtual reality on your phone, but don't want to drop the money on a fancy PC rig and high-end headset? HTC's newest offering may be for you...if you can get one.
The electronics company announced the HTC Link, a little brother of sorts to its high-end HTC Vive with its own built-in 1080 x 1200 displays and 90Hz refresh rate, but doesn't need to be tethered to a PC.
Instead, the HTC Link attaches to a smartphone (specifically the HTC U11) for the necessary computing power, creating a sort of bridge between top-shelf experiences like the Vive and Oculus Rift and more affordable headsets that rely on a phone for both its display and processing, like Google's Daydream View and Samsung Gear VR.
Good luck getting one, however
HTC has not yet announced a price for the Link, making it unclear just yet if this is the cost-effective medium between mobile and PC VR that some might be hoping for.
Additionally, the HTC Link is currently a Japan exclusive, so it's also not certain when we'll see the in-between VR goggles on the global market, if at all, according to Engadget.
That said, HTC is also hard at work on an entirely different VR headset that doesn't need a PC or even a phone due out later this year. As such, we won't be surprised if the sort-of-niche, HTC U11-powered Link sticks to the sideline to make room for HTC's standalone headset.
