Sam Smith Throws Shade at K-pop, Regrets it For Life
British singer Sam Smith, who is famous for the singles “I’m Not the Only One” and “Stay With Me,” is now under fire from Korean pop fans (also known as K-pop) for throwing shade at the genre.
According to fans’ discovery, Smith had apparently liked a Twitter post made on August 31 claiming that “Kpop all sounds the same and they can’t sing,” Koreaboo reported. Smith received mixed reaction from the fans for it.
Some followers of the genre over at the OneHallyu forum site believed Smith was right, while others suggested otherwise.
“How is he right? There is more or less variety in Kpop, and certainly more than mainstream western pop. As for singing, of course they’re wrong,” one registered user wrote.
Last year, South Korean group Day6 demonstrated their versatility when it comes to music range and talent. The three members of the group, Dowoon, Jae and Wonpil posted a song cover of Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One.”
This demonstration clearly shows the talent K-pop singers have under their name when it comes to the variety of genres they can sing.
It is unclear, however, if Smith intentionally liked the post or it was all accidental. The British singer failed to give any comments regarding the unearthed like for throwing shade at K-pop. It was also reported that the like has been taken down from the artist’s Twitter feed.
The original Twitter user has since tried to defend the liked tweet: “DEAR Kpop stans flooding my mentions, this is the truth about everything you’ve heard. Please tell your stans to stop coming for me and Sam.”

But some K-pop fans were still were not having any of it.

It can’t be denied that K-pop is now becoming mainstream, possibly even putting the genre alongside Western music in terms of popularity.
A perfect example of this case is the recent winning streak of South Korean pop group, BTS, from several overseas music awards shows, including taking the victory from American pop sensation, Justin Bieber.
