‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Isn’t Called ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ in Germany and Italy
The wait for “Crazy Rich Asians” to hit theaters is finally over, but one German moviegoer spotted one important detail missing from movie posters in his country.
While the film adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel of the same name has yet to be released in several countries including Germany, Hamburg-based freelance illustrator BoFeng Lin noticed that the word “Asians” on promotional materials was dropped from the title.
“Not only can’t I watch #crazyrichasians in my city in Germany, they also removed the word ‘Asians’ from the title. Why Germany? #wtfgermany,” he shared on his social media accounts.
Germany was not the only European country to change the title. “Crazy Rich Asians” is called “Crazy & Rich” in Italy.
American movies are tailored toward U.S. audiences, while big movie studios are forced to make Americans work for audiences overseas, Cracked noted.
But German fans of “Crazy Rich Asians” were befuddled.
“Why is the movie called Crazy Rich and not Crazy Rich Asians? I mean, after all, it’s about rich Asians,” one commenter wrote, as translated by Google Translate.
“I can not believe that in the German version Crazy Rich Asians only made Crazy Rich … WTF people,” another said.
Even before the release of the film, executives told director Jon M. Chu he needed to change the title.
“People wanted to change the name of the movie. But the book is called Crazy Rich Asians. It’s a provocative title. I think it creates conversation, which I think is good,” he told Yahoo Entertainment.
NextShark has reached out to Warner Bros. for comment and will update when we hear back.
