Chinese University Serves Popular Steamed Eggs With ANTS for Extra Crunch

The cafeteria of a university in eastern China has gone viral on social media after serving steamed eggs with ants for extra crunch.

While ants in a meal may appear to be an immediate violation of health and sanitation policies, the unconventional dish is in fact a favorite that students reportedly return to queue for seconds.

Cooks at Fuyang Normal University introduced the new dish on May 16, according to Beijing News.

“For me, it tastes pretty good — it’s salty,” a freshman said. “It tastes just like steamed eggs, but because there are ants, it’s a bit crunchy.”

Still, other students reportedly found the dish to be strange and terrifying.

It’s unclear how exactly the new cafeteria meal is prepared, but it’s safe to assume it’s done like regular steamed eggs, which may include more conventional ingredients such as spring onions, mushrooms and seafood.

Weibo users commented:

“It looks horrible.”

“Next, it’ll be fried rice.”

“Just by looking at it, I already feel ticklish.”

“I heard that ants have no taste, so I want to find out for myself.”

“What I’m more curious about is where these ants actually came from.”
