Chinese Woman Assaulted and Robbed in SF Chinatown Comes Forward
A woman who was assaulted and robbed of her purse in San Francisco’s Chinatown has come forward with details of the attack that happened only hours after the now infamous assault and robbery of an elderly Chinese man in Bayview.
Hair stylist Lihua Yang was walking to work on Sunday morning at 9:10 a.m. when a dark-colored sedan pulled up near the mouth of the Stockton Tunnel. A man was caught on surveillance cameras getting out of the vehicle, walking into the tunnel, and came out dragging Yang out on the ground.

She is seen struggling as the man attempts to violently yank the purse from her. Another man gets out of the car to assist him. Eventually, they force Yang’s purse from her and the men return to the car and speed off.
“He took my bag, and I tried to protect my bag, that’s why I hold it, but then he continued to drag, and then I fell down and he dragged me through the tunnel,” Yang told KPIX 5 through the help of a Cantonese translator.

The robbers made off with her purse, identification, iPhone, and $40. Yang also suffered bruises on her legs and a bump on her head.
“When I got home that day I couldn’t even stand up because it was so painful,” she says.
The robbery happened hours after the attack on an elderly Chinese man collecting cans for recycling in Bayview. One suspect has since been arrested in that case.
Yang says she is now too scared to take the same route to work again:
“I’m too scared to walk that Stockton Street tunnel again. No more. I won’t walk that tunnel because that tunnel is already very dark.”
The mouth of the tunnel has multiple surveillance cameras that caught three suspects and their vehicle. Police are now looking for the suspects.
The SFPD is asking anyone with information on this attack to contact their anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444.
