Sony Reveals 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 G Master Lens, Its Longest E-Mount Yet
In addition to the impressive new a9 mirrorless camera, Sony also debuted a new lens today. Meet the brand-new 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 OSS G Master super telephoto zoom lens—the longest E-mount lens Sony has ever manufactured.
The new lens—part of Sony’s flagship line of high-end G Master lenses—boasts “incredibly fast, precise AF capabilities, a lightweight, portable design and a variety of professional functions and customizability.” It also promises edge-to-edge sharpness throughout the zoom and focus range, and “beautiful rendered ‘bokeh’.”
All of this thanks to an optical design that features 22 lens elements in 16 groups, including a Super ED and two ED glass elements to fight chromatic aberration, and Sony’s Nano AR coating to reduce reflections.
Finally, since this lens is aimed at least in part at wildlife and sports shooters, it also features a double linear motor and a Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor (SSM) actuator for precise, quiet focusing, weather sealing, and built-in optical stabilization… although Sony doesn’t mention what kind of shake reduction you can expect from that built-in OSS.
Here’s a closer look at the new lens:
