Amazon's Alexa boss says the ultimate goal is to reinvent the 'Star Trek' computer (AMZN)
Amazon's Alexa smart voice assistant has over 15,000 skills, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Speaking with BBC, David Limp, Amazon's senior vice president who oversees Alexa and all of its Amazon devices, said there are tens of thousands of developers and engineers working to give Alexa more skills and capabilities.
Currently, Alexa-enabled devices are good at taking commands, but are unable to sustain more conversational interactions. The ultimate goal, Limp explained, is to reinvent the Star Trek computer at some point in the future.
Amazon has already given customers the ability to change their Alexa's wake word to "Computer" instead of "Alexa," but soon enough customers may be getting the full "Star Trek" experience.
