iPhone X deals: what price should you expect to pay?

No matter how many supposed leaks and insider tips emerge about Apple's new anniversary iPhone we're expecting to be launched on Tuesday September 12, we'll have to wait to find out what it's really going to be called. The smart money still seems to be the iPhone 8, but the dark-horse surging to the front of the field is the iPhone X.

The names of its handsets isn't the only thing that Apple likes to keep secret. We won't know the price until Tuesday evening either. But on this page, we'll tell you how much the iPhone X is likely to cost based on our expert knowledge and previous launches. And it's probably best to sit down - the amount of £££s might make you feel a bit faint!

And the iPhone X isn't the only phone being unveiled this week. Again, naming is up for grabs, but we're expecting iterative updates of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, probably called the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus. But it's the iPhone X that will be the massive departure from what we've been used to with the last few iPhone releases.

iPhone X price: how much will deals cost?

We're going to level with you straightaway. The iPhone X WILL BE EXPENSIVE. There's no getting away from that fact. Because it's a bit of a wildcard of a handset and not the usual iterative improvement from Apple, estimating the price is a toughie.

But there's no doubt in our minds that this will be the most expensive iPhone ever launched. We gather from leaks that it will have a 5.8-inch bezel-free display, so hardware costs are likely to be more expensive than ever. Consider that last year's 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus cost £719 on release. We reckon you can add at least £100 to this, and probably some more on top to boot. So something in the region of £879 at the very least would be our educated guess.

When can I buy the iPhone X?

Tuesday September 12 is the day of the big new iPhone launch and we're 99% confident that you'll be able to place your pre-order as early as this Friday 15. Judging from previous launches, that means stock should be available on the following Friday September 22 - leaving loads of time for prices to drop on Black Friday 2017.

But then again, we're entering the unknown with this iPhone X. Apple just doesn't release three phones at a time, so it may let the fever build to boiling point and hold back the X for a few weeks after the 7S and 7S Plus.

Let's face it - only the super keen are going to part with almost £1,000 outright to get the iPhone X. A 24-month contract is the way that the majority will go, paying a wedge upfront and then more manageable monthly payments. Here's how we see the cheapest of those contracts looking:

You couldn't get the iPhone 7 Plus for any less than £45pm when it hit the shelves. At least one phone retailer will probably be able to get scrape together a tariff for less than £50 a month, but that will only drive up the handset cost. Fingers crossed we're being way too negative and the contract price for the iPhone X will be a lot less than this - but don't bank on it. Total cost over 24 months is £1375

We know...it doesn't make for pretty reading. But it's worth remembering that this will be the biggest, most powerful iPhone ever made.

Prices will of course head upwards if you need more than 2GB of data a month. You're probably looking at over £50pm for 5GB and somewhere towards £60 for data plans exceeding 15GB. On this basis, they'll plunge way over the £1,500 mark for the total you'll pay. We'll go and grab the smelling salts.

If you can afford to buy the phone upfront, and assuming it doesn't start creeping over the £900-mark, then you could look at teaming the iPhone X with one of our best SIM only deals. Pop the 4GB data £9 per month Three SIM in the Apple phone for example, and you could end up saving a couple of hundred quid over the two years.
