Razer laptops reportedly hit by major issue with Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

If you own a Razer laptop, then you might want to bear in mind that there’s (allegedly) a serious problem caused by Windows 10’s latest Fall Creators Update.

According to a post in the Razer forums (as spotted by The Inquirer), all Razer laptops aren’t fully compatible with Version 1709 Build 16299.15, otherwise known as the Fall Creators Update which started rolling out on Tuesday.

Forum denizen Kokorone posted that: “Razer has not updated compatibility with their drivers to support this version of windows and it renders the trackpad, keyboard, and USB features useless when waking from sleep mode on battery power.

“Reinstalling drivers or talking to Razer support will do nothing to fix your issue. The only fix is to roll back to Creators Update until Razer gets their s**t together and fixes the problem.”

So apparently, after installing the latest Windows 10 feature update, if your notebook goes to sleep, when it wakes up you’ll find that peripherals – including the keyboard and trackpad – won’t work anymore until you reboot the machine.

Battery blues

Note that this doesn’t happen when the laptop is plugged into the mains, only when it’s running on battery power. So, in the latter case, this could lead to a hellishly frustrating lot of rebooting…

At this point, we should again underline the fact that this is according to one post, so your mileage may vary with your Razer notebook, of course. Whatever the issue is here, hopefully it won’t remain a problem for long, and an appropriate fix will be issued (either from Razer or Microsoft).

Some users have apparently had some joy from reinstalling Precision drivers, which has cured the issue, but others haven’t had any success in remedying the reboot debacle.

The unfortunate thing with Windows 10, of course, is that you can’t delay these big feature updates.

Well, you can delay them for a short period, or perhaps a longer one if you’re willing to set your PC to the ‘metered connection’ option (head to Network & Internet in Settings, then go to Ethernet or Wi-Fi depending on which type of connection you’re using). But that workaround is very clunky and has all sorts of other negative ramifications (like potentially not getting security updates) which make it far from ideal.
